Looking for The Best Seafood in SG? Here’s Where to Get It!
Things to do in Singapore:
- Visit Universal Studios Singapore (USS)
- Enjoy scenic views
- Eat good food
While you may not find an answer or a further explanation for number 2 in this article, we’ve got number 3 covered for you! Yes, we know exactly where the good food is!
The definition of good food to you may depend on your taste, but sometimes you need to go against what your tongue craves to really discover what’s good. If you are a tourist or someone who is on the lookout for good food in Singapore, how would you begin your journey? You can’t simply stop by all ‘domestic-looking’ stalls by the streets, right? Or maybe you could, we don’t judge.
The point is, to have it all at once is almost impossible. You have to find one point to start your local-food-hunting. In Singapore, many would agree that that point is Zi Char (also spelt as Tze Char)! When it comes to Singapore cuisine, nothing is homelier and more local than the timeless Zi Char foods. Zi Char is a Hokkien term used to refer to a food stall that serves a wide selection of common dishes resembling homemade rice-based meals. Some of the most popular Zi Char dishes include Hotplate Tofu, Deep-Fried Pork Ribs, Salted Egg Crab, Cereal Prawn, and – hold your drool – Chilli Crab itself!
This brings us to the next question, what kind of Zi Char dishes should you go for? Browsing through the wide variety of Zi Char cuisine can be overwhelming. Let’s face it, we’ve all been in that situation where everything on the menu looks good and we feel like ordering a bit of EVERYTHING. Coincidentally, that is in fact the fun part of eating Zi Char food! Since the dishes are usually served in huge portions, people would come in a group so everyone can indeed have a bit of everything. If even after putting your heads together, you and others are still at a loss for what to pick off the menu, fret not! That’s what we are here to help you with today!
Some of the best seafood dishes you can find:
- Mala Crab
- Fish Head Steamboat
- Black Pepper Crab
- Yuzu Wasabi Oyster
- Chilli Lobster
- Cereal Prawn
We’re off to a strong start! Do you often find yourself needing a bit of kick to wake you up on a cold, chilly night? Our Mala Crab will give you one right in the throat! Comes in 3 different levels of spiciness, this dish is made with special Indian dried chillies and Sichuan peppercorns to create astounding flavours with the ability to numb your tongue! As you can imagine based on the spices used, the taste is simply out of this world! What makes it more special is the fact that the recipe comes from our head chef’s own mom which he later recreated to share with the world. At the end of the cooking process, his homemade Mala sauce will be poured on top of the crab to make sure every bite of its meat will give you a burst of spicy flavours. Do you believe your tongue is ready for the sensation of maximum spiciness? Don’t give it a second thought and let us serve you with a serving of our Extra Spicy Mala Crab!
Fish Head Steamboat
The first one is hard to beat, but we’ll try our best! The next best thing we would recommend to satisfy your craving for seafood would be the mighty fish head steamboat. You may choose from a selection of fish like red garoupa or Chinese pomfret, whichever is up to your liking. The fish will be served in a steaming hot flavourful broth filled with an assortment of vegetables. Due to its gigantic size, one serving of it can feed a group of up to 5 pax! Since it may be filled with spices, you might want to add a side of cooling vegetables as well into your order. A dish like this is great to keep you full and your meal balanced. Even if you are not a fan of fish in general, you should still give this one a try. Who knows, maybe a slurp of its zestful soup will make you change your mind easily!
Black Pepper Crab
As we like to think, sweet and spicy could never go wrong! That’s why if we could, we’d fit all of our sweet and spicy dishes into this list! But we’d keep our cool instead and just pick a few of the best ones. If you crave spicy and sweet but Mala Crab is too strong for you, this is what we would suggest! Black Pepper Crab comes with not only the aromatic scent but also its piquant sauce that will make you subconsciously lick your fingers! Want to spice up your meal? Go for this one!
Yuzu Wasabi Oyster
This is hardly an easy-to-come-by dish, but when you finally find it, you’ll see why the quest is totally worth it! With one bite, the robust flavours will completely fill the inside of your mouth thanks to both the oyster liquor and juice from Yuzu. Yuzu is a Japanese citrus fruit which, like many others, tastes sour and perhaps a bit strong for some people. The flavourful yuzu wasabi is normally used as a dipping sauce for various kinds of cooked food. Here at our restaurant, the chef decided to pair it with oysters – a brave recipe to create. The result, however, is hands down worthy of endless praises. The pairing of oysters’ explosion of sea flavours with the citric taste of Yuzu Wasabi creates a phenomenal flavour you will not easily forget.
Another sweet and spicy combination? Yes, please! Because one simply cannot get enough of sweet-and-spicy seafood. Cooked with an even composition of ketchup, chilli, and sambal paste, this dish is a sumptuous play on the unofficial dish of Singapore that needs no introduction, Chilli Crab. If Chilli Crab is becoming too mainstream for you, what do you say we give way to Chilli Lobster for a change? The greatest thing about lobster is how meaty the whole thing is. You could crack the narrowest part that is closest to the tail and you’ll still discover more meat to munch on! Another tasty alternative to this dish is our Garlic Lobster which is equally strong-tasting but less spicy, so we’ll leave you here to make up your mind!
A sinful dish that makes everyone keep reaching for more! Seriously, we could never thank the inventor enough for this perfectly-balanced sweet and savoury dish. If you have tasted this marvellous piece of art, you’d agree with us saying the buttery cereal is as good as the prawn itself! Even after you have finished the prawns, you could still mix the cereal with rice and continue to have a solid, satisfying meal. Before you know it, you’ll have the plate of cereal prawns all cleaned up! We would particularly suggest this if you are bringing along some kids out for a meal. Perhaps due to the mixture of crispy texture and addictive taste, but we can certainly tell that kids often love this dish more than rest on the table!
A table of Zi Char meal could not be complete without a side of omelette or a plate of stir-fried vegetables! We highly recommend Fu Rong Omelette and Cai Pu Omelette to give your plain rice the perfect pair in the form of a savoury egg. Lastly, the often looked upon but crucial aspect of any Zi Char meal; the veggies. The Kang Kong and Kai Lan are the top picks of many, but we’d let you make your own choice! The presence of omelette and vegetables will perfectly wrap up your Zi Char order. And there you have it! A wholesome, hearty meal to feed a group of hungry, craving foodies.
